Midweek Fishing Holidays

I think we whole hardheartedly agree with Ted Hughes when he said –

“Fishing provides that connection with the whole living world. It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way. A form of meditation, some form of communion with levels of yourself that are deeper than the ordinary self”

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting by a river or lake fishing.  Some say it is a way of life and a holiday is just not a holiday without spending some time with a rod in the water.  A midweek fishing holiday has many benefits that a weekend fishing holiday might lack.  Not only is it generally quieter and tranquil for the fisherman, the fish tend to relax more with less lines in the water.   As an angler you can also enjoy cherry picking the best swims.

Thinking of booking a fishing holiday?  We asked Will Aldridge from Will Carp Fishing for his Do’s and Don’ts for making the most of your fishing holiday:

Fishing holidays – Taking on a new lake

Do –

Look at the surface of the lake for fizzers (the fish feeding on the bottom often kick up a flurry of bubbles)Fish under the surface of the lake

Look for showing fish – visibly coming up for air or feeding

Spot visibly Cruising fish – or just under the surface

Watch for birds feeding from the lake – Usually you see a bird that is picking up bits that have floated up from the bottom, fish will be feeding below

Notice cloudy water – fish disturbing the lake bed as they feed below

Fish feeding on the lakeThink about the wind direction and speed as well as air temperature – You want to be either on the back of the wind or end of the wind. The end of the wind means that when you put bait in the water it blows food down to that area of the lake.  Or if it’s quite cold the fish could be on the back of the wind to find the shelter.  It’s a good bet to go to the end of the wind and see if there is a sheltered spot there – give it a try!

Don’t –

Change your rigs or baits just because it’s a new location, go with what you are confident with.

Never go on previous capture reports – Following reports of a great haul from a certain peg or area it can be tempting to go straight there and assume you will catch the same, this would very rarely be the case.  Be confident with your own judgement and enjoy a great fishing holiday.
